The alleged Pakistani airstrike on a drug treatment center in Afghanistan on March 16 was unlawful and may amount to a war crime, the international human rights organization Human Rights Watch has said.
The organization said in a statement that the attack targeted a center where drug addicts were being treated, and that the operation raised concerns about serious violations of international humanitarian law.
Human Rights Watch has called on Pakistani authorities to conduct a transparent, impartial, and comprehensive investigation into the incident and to bring those responsible to justice if violations are proven at any level.
According to the organization, targeting civilian facilities during armed conflicts violates international humanitarian law, and states must ensure effective investigations into such incidents.
On the other hand, Pakistan has denied allegations that civilians were targeted in the attack, while authorities maintain that the operations are carried out against terrorist elements.
The incident comes at a time when there are already concerns about the security situation and cross-border operations in the region, and human rights organizations are continuously monitoring such actions.
