Hearing on the applications for suspension of sentences of Iman Mazari and Hadi Ali, notice issued to the state party for June 1

The Islamabad High Court heard various applications regarding the early hearing of the applications for suspension of sentences of human rights lawyers Iman Mazari and Hadi Ali Chatha, where the court issued notices to the state party for June 1.

During the hearing held on Wednesday, lawyer Faisal Siddiqui requested the court to schedule the case for hearing on Monday before Eid-ul-Adha so that early progress can be made on the appeals of the petitioners. However, Justice Azam Khan remarked that Monday is the last working day before Eid, so it is not possible to schedule the case on that day.

After the court adjourned the hearing till June 1, it is being expressed that Iman Mazari and Hadi Ali Chatha will spend another Eid in Adiala Jail. This development is being viewed with concern by human rights groups and the legal community, while the issue is also being discussed on social media.

It should be noted that both lawyers had filed applications for suspension of sentence and early hearing to provide them relief until the appeals are decided.
