Authorities in Lahore, the capital of Pakistan’s Punjab province, have detained the three sisters of former Prime Minister and PTI founder Imran Khan—Aleema Khan, Noreen Niazi, and Uzma Khan—for 30 days under the Maintenance of Public Order (3-MPO) ordinance and transferred them to Kot Lakhpat Jail.
The Deputy Commissioner of Lahore confirmed that Aleema Khan was taken into custody under 3-MPO following police recommendations and concerns regarding a potential breach of the peace. According to her relative, Qasim Zaman Khan, she was detained outside the Lahore Gymkhana and immediately moved to Kot Lakhpat Jail.
Following Aleema Khan’s detention, police also detained Imran Khan’s other two sisters, Noreen Niazi and Uzma Khan, for 30 days. Under orders issued by the Deputy Commissioner of Lahore, both have also been transferred to Kot Lakhpat Jail.
These actions come at a time when the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) had announced a long march towards Islamabad for September 27; in anticipation of this, Section 144 has been enforced in Punjab since September 13. Authorities state that the purpose of these arrests is to curb the opposition’s protest movement and protest-related mobilizations.
