PM Modi calls BNP leader Tariq Rahman, congratulates him on election victory

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader Tariq Rahman and congratulated him on his election victory.

Tariq Rahman is being considered as the expected Prime Minister of Bangladesh.

In his statement after the telephone conversation, the Indian Prime Minister said, “I called Tariq Rahman and congratulated him on his resounding victory in the Bangladesh elections.”

Prime Minister Modi said that in the telephone conversation, he reiterated his commitment to peace, development and prosperity for the people of Bangladesh and India.

Prime Minister Modi’s statement has come at a time when relations between the two countries are tense and former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is living in exile in India.

India has alleged that incidents of targeting the Hindu community in Bangladesh have increased, but the Bangladeshi interim government denies these allegations.
