The Baloch National Movement (BNM) staged a protest outside the United Nations headquarters in New York, drawing the international community’s attention to the human rights situation, enforced disappearances, and extrajudicial killings in Balochistan, while demanding “immediate action” from the UN.
The protest took place on First Avenue, between 42nd and 43rd Streets, from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM, coinciding with the 81st session of the UN General Assembly.
During the demonstration, protesters chanted slogans against human rights violations in Balochistan and displayed various placards and banners. A tableau depicting enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings in Balochistan was also presented, symbolically highlighting these incidents and the plight of the victims.
Samiullah Baloch, President of the BNM’s American chapter, along with others, addressed the gathering.
During the protest, the BNM highlighted issues such as military operations in Balochistan, the enforced disappearance of thousands of individuals, the arrest of Baloch Yakjehti Committee leaders, women, and human rights activists, as well as allegations of collective punishment.
The organization also focused on the targeting of women and children, the destruction of homes, and the displacement of populations as key themes of the protest.
The BNM called upon the United Nations and the international community to “break their silence” regarding the situation in Balochistan and to take “immediate action.”
Slogans calling for a “Free Balochistan” and an end to enforced disappearances were raised during the protest. This protest took place while Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif was addressing the United Nations General Assembly.
According to the BNM, the protest in New York was part of its efforts to highlight the Balochistan issue on the global stage during the UN General Assembly session.
