NSUI Leaders and Several Activists Arrested in Delhi

In India’s capital, Delhi, several activists—including Vinod Jakhar, National President of the National Students Union of India (NSUI); B.V. Srinivas, associated with the Congress Seva Dal; and Uday Bhanu Chib, President of the Indian Youth Congress—have been taken into custody while protesting outside the Parliament Street Police Station.

Some of the activists were detained late Thursday night, while others were taken into custody early Friday morning.

According to PTI, the NSUI—a student organization affiliated with the Congress party—stated that they were staging a sit-in (dharna) to demand the registration of an FIR regarding alleged violence against the organization’s female members.

The NSUI alleges that a female officer of the Delhi Police mistreated and assaulted their female activists. The organization claims that despite lodging a complaint with senior police officials, no FIR has been registered yet.

Vinod Jakhar stated, “We even met with the Additional DCP on Wednesday, yet no action has been taken.”

The NSUI has warned that if the case is not registered, they will intensify their protest movement. The organization asserted that the detention of its leaders will not halt the ongoing protest for justice.

The Delhi Police has not yet issued a response regarding the allegations made by the NSUI.
