Decision to indict journalist Matiullah Jan

A decision has been taken to indict him in the alleged fake FIR registered against Matiullah Jan.

Judge Tahir Abbas Supra of the special anti-terrorism court rejected the application for jurisdiction in the terrorism and narcotics case and issued an order to indict him on Thursday.

Matiullah Jan, in his statement released on social media platform X (Twitter), took the stand that the government is moving forward with a “fake case”, which, according to him, is an open attack on journalists and journalism.

He said that he was disappeared from PIMS Hospital in Islamabad on November 27 along with journalist Saqib Bashir, after which this FIR was registered against him.

Matiullah Jan says that serious allegations like terrorism and narcotics against him are baseless and the purpose of this case is to put pressure on him and other journalists.

On the other hand, the government’s stance has not yet been revealed. After the court issues the indictment, the formal hearing of the case will begin, in which the prosecution and defense will present their respective arguments.

The case is sparking a new debate about press freedom and judicial proceedings in the country.
