The US Supreme Court has invalidated the global tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump last year.
According to the Supreme Court’s decision, these tariffs were not legally valid and cannot be maintained.
The decision was announced at 8:05 pm on Friday. The court’s order is expected to have a major impact on the US government’s trade policy.
The US Supreme Court has said in its decision that President Trump exceeded his authority when imposing global tariffs. The Supreme Court ruled that Trump imposed these tariffs under a law that is reserved only for national emergencies.
The US Supreme Court has invalidated the global tariffs imposed by Trump by a ratio of 6-3. In the decision, three liberal justices, Ketanji Brown Jackson, Elena Kagan and Sonia Sotomayor, joined three conservative justices, Amy Coney Barrett, Neil Gorsuch and Chief Justice John Roberts, in voting to declare the tariffs illegal.
On the other hand, Justices Brett Kavanaugh, Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas wrote dissenting notes, disagreeing with the decision.
The court made it clear that the International Emergency Economic Powers Act does not give the president the authority to impose tariffs. The decision invalidates the broad trade measures implemented by the Trump administration.
The decision will have a major impact on US trade policy and, according to experts, will further clarify the limits of the president’s powers in the future.
Trump repeatedly mentioned the tariffs while speaking at an event in the state of Georgia on Thursday afternoon. He said that if there were no tariffs, “everyone would be bankrupt.”
President Trump claimed that as president he had the ‘right’ to impose tariffs because ‘the language is very clear.’ He also complained about the wait for the Supreme Court’s decision, saying, ‘I’ve been waiting forever for this decision. Forever.’
President Trump’s reaction to the Supreme Court’s decision has not yet been revealed.
