Increase in harassment cases in Gilgit-Baltistan is a worrying trend, Gohar Ayub Qureshi

Expressing serious concern over the increasing incidents of harassment in a peaceful region like Gilgit-Baltistan, Vice Chairman International Human Rights Movement Gilgit-Baltistan Gohar Ayub Qureshi has said that the incident of harassment and alleged kidnapping of a girl by a police officer in the Jatiyal area yesterday is very sad, condemnable and a moment of reflection for the law enforcement agencies.

He said that threats by the relevant agencies to a journalist for reporting the incident are against the freedom of the press, which is condemned no matter how much.

He demanded that an impartial investigation be conducted into this matter and strict action be taken against the responsible elements.

Talking to the media, Gohar Ayub Qureshi said that the police force has been established to protect the lives and property of the people, however, such incidents not only damage the reputation of the police department but also spread fear and panic in the entire society.

He said that such incidents are completely against our social values and traditions.

He demanded that the incident be investigated transparently and immediately and the official involved be given exemplary punishment so that no one dares to take the law into their own hands in the future.

He said that the fact that sometimes FC and sometimes police officials are found involved in such incidents every day is a question mark on the accountability system within the state institutions.

Gohar Ayub Qureshi demanded that the caretaker government and the judiciary take suo motu notice of such serious incidents, otherwise our mothers and sisters will continue to feel unsafe.

He said that the recent incident has created an atmosphere of fear in the area, which cannot be ended without timely, transparent and effective action by the state institutions.
