The Gilgit-Baltistan government has given in-principle approval to several important and far-reaching decisions to review the overall law and order situation in the region and ensure stability. The aim of these decisions is to ensure the rule of law, protect the lives and property of citizens and permanently crack down on miscreants.
According to a government statement, in-principle approval has been given to form a high-level judicial commission to conduct a transparent investigation into the overall situation in Gilgit-Baltistan. Along with this, it has been decided to launch a large-scale de-weaponization campaign in the entire Gilgit, for which the relevant institutions have been directed to immediately complete all necessary arrangements.
The government has made it clear that the law will strictly take its course against elements involved in vandalism of government institutions, private properties and incidents of vandalism in Gilgit and Skardu and no kind of mischief will be tolerated. In view of the security situation, curfew will remain in force in Gilgit, while the decision to extend the curfew in Skardu will be taken keeping in mind the ground realities and the changing situation.
Approval has also been given to conduct an immediate survey of the affected infrastructure and start their restoration work on priority basis with regard to development issues. In addition, orders have been given to further intensify the crackdown against hate speeches, spread of fake news and cyber crimes. Inter-district transfers of personnel are also being implemented as per the IGP’s plan to improve the operational efficiency of the police.
