The Gilgit administration has registered an FIR against Mir Babar Hussain, Vice Chairman of Karakoram Students Organization (KSO), for a statement made on social media during the Pak-Afghan tension.
According to the administration, Mir Babar’s statement was considered a “pro-Afghanistan stance” and a threat to the integrity of the country.
According to sources, the FIR has taken the position that the young leader’s statement was irresponsible in a sensitive situation, which could have a negative impact on public sentiment and the state narrative.
On the other hand, political and social circles of Gilgit-Baltistan have reacted strongly, calling the action against a peaceful student leader unfair.
They say that criminalizing dissent is tantamount to pushing the youth towards further anxiety and distrust.
Public circles have demanded that the government provide opportunities for dialogue and democratic expression of opinion to the youth, rather than suppressing their voices.
