Israel claims to have targeted the secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council

The Israeli military has claimed that it has targeted Ali Larijani, the secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council. According to military officials, the operation was carried out late at night, but it is not clear whether Larijani was injured or killed.

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz has claimed that Larijani has been killed, but there has been no official response from Iran yet.

According to Israeli media, Larijani was in a secret apartment with his son at the time of the attack.

In a separate statement, the Israeli military also claimed to have killed Gholam Reza Soleimani, commander of Iran’s paramilitary Basij Force.

According to the military, Soleimani led this militia affiliated with the Revolutionary Guards for six years. Iranian media have not released any news in this regard.

Following the Israeli claims, a handwritten message has appeared on Iranian state media and Larijani’s social media accounts, paying tribute to the fighters of the Iranian Navy. The message is not timed or dated.

However, state media says it was made today. The statement comes as Iran is paying tribute to the 84 sailors killed in the attack on a US submarine.

Ali Larijani is an influential figure in Iranian politics. He was appointed Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council in August 2025 with the approval of President Masoud Peshkeshian and is also the Supreme Leader’s representative on the council.

He previously served as the Speaker of Iran’s Parliament from May 2008 to May 2020 and as Iran’s chief nuclear negotiator from 2005 to 2007. Larijani is considered a “moderate conservative” within Iran’s current leadership.

Several members of his family also play important roles in Iranian politics. His brother, Sadeq Larijani, is the chairman of the Expediency Council. Ali Larijani had submitted nomination papers for the 2021 and 2024 presidential elections, but the Guardian Council disqualified him. A few days ago, he was seen with the public during a Quds Day rally in Tehran.
