The secretariat of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council has confirmed the death of Basij commander Gholam Reza Soleimani, along with the council’s secretary Ali Larijani.
The organization said in a statement that Ali Larijani was killed along with his son Morteza Larijani, the council’s deputy security officer Ali Reza Bayat, and a group of bodyguards.
Israeli media are claiming that Ali Larijani was attacked while he was hiding in a secret apartment with his son.
Earlier, Israeli authorities announced that the secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, Ali Larijani, and Basij commander Gholam Reza Soleimani had been killed.
On Tuesday night, the Revolutionary Guards confirmed that Basij commander Gholam Reza Soleimani had been killed in an Israeli strike.
Gholam Reza Soleimani was one of the highest-ranking officials in the Revolutionary Guards. Soleimani’s death is one of the most important news stories of the war, following the deaths of several military commanders, including the commander-in-chief on the first day of the US and Israeli attacks on Iran.
The Basij, which is organizationally subordinate to the Revolutionary Guards, is one of Iran’s government security forces and plays a key role in managing internal affairs, as well as suppressing and controlling protests.
The Sipah News website published a report on his background at the time of his appointment as commander of the Basij.
According to the report, he was born in 1964 in the city of Farsan in Chaharmahal-e-Bakhtiari province.
At the time of his appointment, he was a PhD student in history and his thesis was on the topic of ‘The History of Iran in the Islamic Era’, while he had also completed command and staff courses.
Gholam Reza Soleimani joined the Basij in 1988 and participated in dozens of operations during the Iran-Iraq War, including Fatah al-Mubin, Beit al-Maqdis, Ramadan, Muharram, and Khyber, where he served as a Basij company commander and battalion commander.
He rose through the military ranks and served as commander of the 44th Qamar Bani Hashim Brigade, the 57th Abul Fazl Brigade, and concurrently as commander of the Lorestan Region. He also commanded the 19th Fajr Division, the Quds Headquarters, the 41st Sarallah Division, and the 41st Imam Hussein Division.
