A methane gas explosion in a coal mine located in the Surrange area of Quetta, the capital of Balochistan, trapped 42 miners inside the mine, while the bodies of 34 miners have been recovered so far during the rescue operation.
According to Mines Department and PDMA officials, rescue operations were immediately launched after the explosion that occurred on Thursday afternoon, however, the operation is facing severe difficulties due to the presence of toxic gas inside the mine and the lack of modern rescue equipment.
Officials say that rescue teams are trying to reach other trapped miners, however, there is a fear that the death toll will increase further. The rescue operation is still ongoing.
On the other hand, mining workers’ organizations have once again expressed concern over the lack of safety measures in mines, saying that such accidents are occurring repeatedly due to the lack of effective implementation of safety principles in the mining sector in Balochistan.
It should be noted that according to the annual report of the Pakistan Central Mines Labor Federation, 89 miners lost their lives in various accidents that occurred in coal mines in Balochistan during 2025, while the rate of coal mine accidents in Balochistan has been higher than in other parts of the country.
