UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said the Secretary-General is deeply concerned by the attacks on each other by the United States and Iran overnight Tuesday and Wednesday.
On Wednesday, he said the Secretary-General was “particularly concerned by reports of civilian casualties, including an attack on a wedding party. Attacks on civilians are unacceptable in any way.”
Speaking at a press briefing, Dujarric said, “The Secretary-General appeals to all parties to exercise utmost restraint, to abide by their obligations under international humanitarian law, and to refrain from any actions or statements that could further escalate tensions.”
He added that the Secretary-General remains convinced that there is no military solution to this crisis and that diplomacy is the only way forward.
Dujarric said the secretary-general “calls on all parties to return to the path of dialogue and diplomatic efforts without further delay.”
A few days ago, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres met with Iranian President Masoud Peshmerga in Kyrgyzstan.
Earlier, the Iranian Red Crescent Society wrote to the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague condemning the US attacks in southern Iran, which reportedly targeted a wedding party.
In its letter, the Red Crescent said that four people, including a child, were killed in the airstrike and 67 others were injured.
According to the Red Crescent, the attack took place at 9:30 pm local time on Tuesday, when a wedding ceremony was underway in the Kohstak area of Sirik.
In a statement released on Telegram, the organization said: “The death toll may rise given the critical condition of some of the injured.”
