Britain announces sanctions on Israeli settlements in the West Bank

British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband has announced a number of measures, including a ban on imports of goods from Israeli settlements in the illegally occupied West Bank.

Speaking in the British parliament on Tuesday, Miliband said he did not think “the British public would want our shops to support the occupation by allowing products from settlements.”

He added that a “comprehensive sanctions regime” would be established, including “appropriate religious exemptions.”

Addressing those facilitating illegal settlements, Miliband said: “You will face the full force of British sanctions.”

He told MPs that Britain agrees that ethnic cleansing is taking place in parts of the West Bank.

Miliband said the occupation of the West Bank is “illegal” in the British government’s view.

He also announced a ban on advertising for illegal Israeli settlements in the West Bank in the UK.

The Foreign Secretary said that the sanctions regime would target “illegal settlements and their expansion, not Israel.”

Miliband added that the UK was also imposing sanctions on “extremist settlers” who supported or incited acts of violence against Palestinian communities.
