In Quetta, the capital of Balochistan, one police officer was killed and four people—including two police officers—were injured in a shooting by unidentified gunmen.
According to government officials, the attack took place on Monday, targeting a police vehicle on Joint Road.
Shahid Rind, the Special Assistant to the Chief Minister of Balochistan for Media, stated that the attack targeted the vehicle of the Station House Officer (SHO) of the Satellite Town police station. One police officer died in the firing, while two others were wounded.
Police officials identified the deceased officer as Constable Noman. A passerby was also injured in the shooting; the wounded officers and civilians were shifted to the hospital for medical treatment.
Condemning the incident, Shahid Rind expressed his condolences and sympathy to the family of the deceased officer. He stated that an investigation into the attack is underway and those involved will be brought to justice.
Amid the deteriorating overall security situation in Balochistan, police personnel—like members of other law enforcement agencies—have frequently been targeted by militants and extremist groups.
Police officials report a significant increase in casualties among police personnel this year compared to the previous year.
Statistics show that 63 police officers were killed in attacks in Balochistan last year, whereas the death toll has risen to 98 so far this year. Police officials state that since the police force is regarded as a symbol of state authority and government writ, militant and extremist elements are continuously targeting it.
