The story of thousands of years of human civilization being erased by capitalist projects
By : Waheed Hasan
The historical heritage of thousands of years of mankind in the form of stone carvings in the Diamer district of Gilgit-Baltistan is about to be buried soon. After the completion of the Diamer Bhasha Dam, about 38 thousand stones, on which there are prehistoric and post-historical drawings of animals, humans and various symbols, will be completely submerged. It should be noted that these impressions on these stones are not only from the era of Buddhism and Hinduism, but the carvings on these stones from Raikot to Shatial are also from the end of the Stone Age, before the Neolithic Revolution.
According to Dr. Jason Niles, in addition to the carvings and inscriptions on these stones in Diamer district, there are also inscriptions in ancient languages of South Asia, Iran and Central Asia, which are written in the Kharosti and Brahmani scripts.
So far, more than 5,000 stones have been completely demolished during the construction and mining of the road, and after the completion of the dam, the history preserved through carvings, inscriptions and calligraphy on 38,000 of the total 55,000 stones will be demolished and buried forever.
Pakistan’s ruling class has already been spreading the illusion of progress by declaring the Diamer-Bhasha Dam project as a guarantee of prosperity, but in practice this project is going to bury our centuries-old history and civilization forever. Federal Minister Owais Leghari has hinted at completely removing the electricity component from the Diamer-Bhasha Dam project in July 2025, from which it can be deduced that the sole purpose of completing this project now is to build a water reservoir, which will provide water to the corporate farms of big capitalists and landlords in Punjab and benefit the capitalist class.
