A series of attacks in Iraq has continued this week, and on Tuesday the US embassy in Baghdad’s heavily fortified Green Zone came under heavy attack. The attack came a day after a drone strike in the same area set a luxury hotel on fire.
The US embassy was attacked with drones and rockets, according to news agencies Reuters and AFP.
Iraqi security sources said the attack was the most severe in a recent series.
According to security officials, three drones and four rockets were fired at the embassy, at least one of which fell inside the embassy.
Eyewitnesses said they saw three drones heading towards the embassy, two of which were shot down while one crashed into the compound.
Interestingly, about six hours before the attack, the US embassy had issued a new security alert for American citizens in Iraq.
The alert warned that armed groups affiliated with Iran were repeatedly targeting Baghdad’s main international zone (Green Zone).
Citizens were urged to avoid unnecessary movement and follow security instructions.
In the past few days, attacks on US interests and sensitive security installations have increased in Iraq.
Attacks on heavily fortified areas like the Green Zone are a cause for concern for security agencies.
These incidents could further escalate the already tense situation in the region and are increasing pressure on the Iraqi government to take effective action against the attacking groups.
