Bashani was half our age but we had a friendly relationship with him. The first source of our connection with him was our ideological teacher, respected Saeed Iqbal (Dada), who was Bashani’s political, ideological and personal (marital) friend. Dada often mentioned Bashani with respect and dignity, thus we established an indirect relationship with Bashani. During the political struggle, I was a regular reader of his column for a long time.

My personal relationship with Bashani began with criticism of an article he had written on the death of Barrister Qurban Ali, which in my opinion did not accurately portray the facts. During this time, I was very active in student politics and was the president of the PNP student wing. I sent him a long text in his inbox. Bashani replied immediately and, showing greatness, admitted that some facts were indeed not stated correctly and added that he would correct himself in the next article. After the traditional greetings and greetings from me, when he learned that I was Dada’s beloved, a personal connection was established and thus the conversation began. When I started writing on various topics, he always encouraged me. I would give my opinion in his inbox and sometimes our differences would increase, he would say that we would talk about it again.

When I moved to Canada in 2017, he asked me what my program was. I told him that my place was Calgary. He said that it has been twenty-five to thirty years since I came to Canada. Since I came from Calgary to Toronto, I have been able to return to Calgary only once or twice. You will be busy in the race of life, who knows if we will meet again, so stop by my place for a few days and then go wherever you want. I tried unsuccessfully to avoid it, so he said either I will drive four hours to Montreal and bring you with me, or you can come yourself. I went to Toronto and stayed at his house for four days.

Bashani was known for not being affectionate, but he was like a dear friend to me. He prepared breakfast for me for four days, usually returned home from the office before I got up in the afternoon, and took me with him to various programs, including the office, in the evening. After that, I came to Calgary and became busy with my studies. We continued to talk on the phone from time to time, but as time passed, it stopped. In fact, the tragedy of Bashani, Dada, and their contemporary friends is that their outgoing calls are turned off and they only come into contact when I call them.

Three or four years later, I went to Toronto to submit my barrister’s papers, but I did not inform him due to his illness. During a conversation with our mutual friend Habib-ur-Rehman, he came to know that I had come to Toronto, so he called me and got my address and came to pick me up. He was suffering from a fatal disease of cancer and the doctors had forbidden him from communicating, so even during the visit, I did not tell him about coming to Toronto. I knew about his illness, Corona was at its peak and he was undergoing intensive chemotherapy, so I did not go to his house to stay with him even on his secret and he almost went back in anger. I congratulated him on passing his barrister’s exams. His illness became severe and last year I went to his house in Toronto to take care of him. I often talked to him about not going back home and it always ended in an unpleasant atmosphere.

Bashani was a person with a clear and attractive personality. His views were clearly reflected in his personal life. His favorite topics were politics, current affairs, progressive movements and history. He has written about 8 books (most of which contain his articles). Bashani was active in social and electronic media for a long time and is probably the most popular (famous) person among the progressive people of Pakistani-administered Jammu and Kashmir. I often argued with him that without an ideological organization, all this effort is futile, only organized work can be effective. His answer was always that I cannot join the political struggle. I can only do my part to show the younger generation a way out. The common point between him and us was the need for a vibrant movement to change the plight of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

Bashani was inspired by Indian secularism, but he was angry about the August 2019 incident. When the PNA movement started, Bashani seemed particularly enthusiastic. My friends in Canada tasked me with contacting the PNA leadership and persuading them to form a central diplomatic committee, as self-appointed committees were being announced abroad, which was causing differences. I contacted Zulfiqar Ahmed (Chairman PNA), Liaquat Hayat (Secretary General) and Sajjad Afzal (Secretary Finance) and persuaded them that we should form a diplomatic committee comprising Professor Nazir Nazish, Hameed Bashani and Shaukat Maqbool Butt and lobby for us. In my opinion, Bashani was a presentable person who could present our issue to the world in a reasoned manner, and no freedom-loving party had any objection to Professor Nazish and Shaukat Maqbool. In this regard, Professor Nazish and Barrister Bashani were persuaded to agree, and Bashani even said that he would fulfill any responsibility given by his friends. The PNA leadership happily accepted this proposal.

He accepted and Sajjad Afzal took time from the central committee for approval, but the leadership of the PN was so confused that the diplomatic committee and even the central committee fell apart.

Hamid Bashani was a man of excellent qualities. His ideological maturity was due to his forty-five (45) years of hard work and training. After his death, people also sought paradise for him who, from student politics to practical life, had nothing but sorrow, torture, insults and curses. He was called an atheist, an infidel and an Indian agent. Columns were written in newspapers against his thoughts and life-threatening threats forced him to stay away from his parents, relatives and homeland. Today, most people are saying that Bashani came to Canada for a better life and livelihood. Bashani did not migrate for a comfortable life, but left the country due to language restrictions, restrictions on freedom of expression and violations of human rights. On his death, numerous people interpreted his exile abroad as an economic hardship under an organized conspiracy. There are people all over the world who have their own vested interests in mind. They are simultaneously beneficiaries of the government of the day and pen sellers and conscience sellers. They play the role of brokers for the ruling party in progressive and practical life in Mehfil Sarwar.

On the death of Hamid Bashani, I would like to ask the freedom and progressive warriors of Jammu and Kashmir because these warriors are full of the desire to change the plight of the people. How much manpower and what resources are required to change an area of four thousand square miles and 4.4 million people? Today, when thousands of people are ready to sacrifice their lives for their rights from the platform of the Public Action Committee, why is the progressive and freedom-loving leadership suffering from mutual animosity instead of leading this movement?

A people’s movement is not a reflection of any single organization or thought, nor can all the leadership agree on a single agenda, but what is the obstacle to unity on at least some points, except for personality and narcissism? Even now, if a people’s movement is not organized by setting aside personal grudges, people like Hamid Bashani will continue to die with beautiful dreams of a humane society in their eyes, and they will become the heirs of this scheme-monger Hamid Bashani and sell him, and tomorrow they will start an Urs in his name.

٭٭٭

Barrister Abdul Hamid Bashani’s first death anniversary was observed today in Calgary, Canada with respect and dignity.
