The UK Home Office has confirmed that the government is to ban Iran\u2019s Revolutionary Guards. The move will be made under emergency legislation to crack down on foreign state-backed activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Islamic Movement of Companions of the Right and Russia\u2019s GRU Volunteer Corps have also been added to the list of banned organisations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If parliament approves the move later this week, those involved in sabotage, including arson, by these groups could face life imprisonment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said: \u201cWe will never allow Britain to be a safe haven for countries that seek to sow fear, division and violence on our streets.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Home Office said: \u201cThis will strengthen the government\u2019s ability to tackle state threats from foreign powers, while giving police \u2018greater powers\u2019 to tackle the activities of these three groups.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The statement said: \u201cThose found to be supporting or aiding these organisations could be jailed for up to 14 years under the new offences.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The government said: \u201cIt will now be easier to bring those found to be working with these groups to justice and they can be sent to prison for longer periods.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The British government added: \u201cIt has already taken \u2018strong measures\u2019 against Iran, including imposing full sanctions on the Revolutionary Guards and imposing sanctions on more than 550 individuals and entities linked to Iran.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Interior Minister Shabana Mahmood said that those working for the three organisations would be \u201ctracked down and sent to jail\u201d and vowed that \u201cevery possible step would be taken\u201d to keep the country safe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
