The ongoing protest movement in Azad Kashmir will eventually end one day. Time will pass, the sit-ins will be lifted, the roads will open and life will return to normal. But this movement will definitely leave behind the tragic suffering of dozens of civil and government citizens, the unforgettable trauma of many families and the memories of the political and social awakening of thousands, if not millions of people. And perhaps another memory of this entire scenario will remain for a long time: what role did some faces associated with journalism play during this time, with whom did they stand, whose voice did they become and whose voice did they avoid listening to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is impossible to deny the fact that even thousands of citizens together cannot fight a direct power war with the state. The state also has power, resources, institutions and means of forming a narrative. Modern states convey their opinions to the public not only through force but also through communication and narrative. The media plays a fundamental role in this process. The narrative that is formed in favor of or against a protest or movement does not only affect the participants in the protest but also shapes the opinions of millions of people who are not present on the ground themselves and do not have the opportunity to hear the protesters\u2019 position directly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Something similar seems to be the case with the recent protest movement in Azad Kashmir. This movement, which began about three years ago with the core members of the 31-member Action Committee. Over time, the movement expanded from dozens to hundreds, hundreds to thousands and then millions of people. Whether the demands of this movement are right or wrong, whether the methodology is right or not, it is possible and should be, but one thing should be discussed, however, is whether the overall aspect of this movement presented in the national media of Pakistan was really the result of a completely independent and impartial journalistic process. There are definitely some big names in the national media of Pakistan who have tried to maintain some balance and present the situation to the public from different angles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These include Mr. Aizaz Syed, Mr. Asif Bashir Chaudhry, Ms. Asma Shirazi, Mr. Saleem Safi, Mr. Hamid Mir and some other names. But on the other hand, the question also remains as to why some of the big journalistic organizations, press clubs and many big names associated with the electronic and print media of Pakistan did not bother to travel a hundred or a hundred and fifteen kilometers to Rawalakot, listen directly to the people sitting there and then form their own opinion. Isn’t the basic requirement of journalism that before forming an opinion about any movement, the parties to it should be heard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is the job of a journalist only to pass on the narrative he receives from “above”? Or is the real beauty of journalism that the journalist raises questions, goes himself, sees, listens, researches and then informs the public about all aspects to make a decision. It is a pity that during this time, some people pushed the state narrative forward with such intensity that even ordinary citizens involved in the protest were declared enemies of the country, traitors, Indian agents or outlaws. There were some who had their interests covered, there were some who were busy adding fuel to the fire and there are some for whom journalism probably means sending screenshots to the big house and earning their living.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our friend and renowned journalist of Azad Kashmir, Mr. Amir Mehboob, Mr. Raja Kafeel and Mr. Shahzad Rathore, associated with his organization, these three respected journalistic personalities, today are seen sitting in the same office and on the same chairs and declaring the ongoing movement in Azad Kashmir as null and void and anti-state, whereas last year, this same movement, this same people and this same action committee were declared the voice of the people against the alleged corruption, mismanagement and exploitation of the government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The question is that if last year these people were raising their voices for their rights, how did the same voice suddenly become anti-state today? Have the demands changed or has only the political context of the situation changed. An important question here is what is the reason for the significant difference that appears between the protest narrative of last year and today’s narrative. Does the quality of journalism change with the opening or closing of advertisements? Although the people have the same 38-member Chartered of Demand which is recognized by two governments and in whose favor Mr. Amir Mehboob and his team’s dozens of programs are still part of the record.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another friend of ours is Mr. Khawaja Mateen. After moving from Lahore to Islamabad, he was also associated with the journalism of Azad Kashmir. In the past, Mr. Khawaja Sahib was supervising the media-related affairs of Prime Minister Chaudhry Anwarul Haq, and even guarding them with both hands. During the recent protest, this stance also came to light about Mr. Khawaja Sahib that the people of Poonch always launch movements for subsidies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If this opinion is really his, then it is also a question worth considering that when these same people were protesting in the past, what was Mr. Khawaja Sahib’s stance. Were these same people just desirous of subsidies even then or was their protest being viewed from some other angle. If the same people, the same region and the same protest start taking on different meanings at different times according to different political circumstances, then it is natural to ask what is the measure of journalism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I have been associated with the field of journalism since 2006 and during this period I have seen Mr. Afzal Butt leading the most protest movements in the name of freedom of the press. After the end of Mr. Haji Nawaz Raza\u2019s long journalistic reign, Mr. Afzal Butt\u2019s prominent era in journalism politics began. After judging, testing and weighing the leaders of various journalistic organizations by my standards, I always felt that despite all his weaknesses and shortcomings, Mr. Afzal Butt is a powerful voice of journalistic workers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This was the reason why on dozens, if not hundreds of occasions, journalists like us stood with him in the protest activities led by him. But I was also very surprised to hear Mr. Afzal Butt\u2019s stance on the recent protest movement in Azad Kashmir. Mr. Afzal Butt, like many other journalists, used the harshest words about the people involved in the movement and seemed to be part of the narrative of declaring them traitors, enemies of the country or outlaws.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The surprise here was even greater because Mr. Afzal Butt belongs to a Kashmiri family. His personal and social connections with the Kashmiri community spread from Muzaffarabad to Islamabad and to Britain and Europe are not hidden from anyone. Mr. Butt spends most of his summers with Kashmiris living in Europe and the UK or in cooler areas like Neelum and Rawalakot. He also has direct contacts with activists and common people associated with various political parties of Azad Kashmir.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then the question is that when a large section of the national media presented a narrative calling this Kashmiri movement anti-national and those associated with it traitors, why did Mr. Afzal Butt not even for a moment try to disagree with this narrative or at least find out the ground realities. Mr. Afzal Butt is currently leading a large faction of the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists. As the head of a large journalistic organization that talks about freedom of the press, was it not his responsibility to go to Rawalakot himself, meet the people there, listen to their demands, understand their position and then tell the world what these people’s demands were.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If the demands are wrong, their mistake would have been exposed through journalistic research and solid evidence, and if the demands are legitimate, their voice would have been conveyed to the public. If there is any such conversation of Mr. Afzal Butt on record in which he has tried to know the position of the people of Azad Kashmir or has gone to Rawalakot to review the ground realities or has expressed concern over the internet shutdown in Azad Kashmir for the past one and a half months or has raised questions about the restrictions on civil liberties or the human rights situation there, then I would definitely like to see it. Because freedom of the press is not just about shouting slogans on the streets of Islamabad, but also about speaking the truth when speaking the truth is not easy. Today, I remember one thing that Mr. Afzal Butt’s critics said that they run the same movement for freedom of the press or the rights of journalists with greater force in which there is some level of patronage from media owners, the government or the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I always ignored this opinion as criticism, but the recent situation in Azad Kashmir has once again raised the question of whether our journalism is really based on principles or its angles keep changing with the circumstances and interests. This question is not only for Mr. Afzal Butt but for all of us that the real test of journalism is not when the powerful stand with us. The real test of journalism is when an ordinary citizen, an oppressed person, a protester, a weak or an unpopular voice wants our attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sit-in will end tomorrow, if not today. Protest movements also reach their end with time. But history decides the role of journalism. History also remembers who asked questions, who remained silent, who did research, who just read the narrative and who bothered to go among them to hear the voice of the people. And perhaps in the future, when someone writes history about this movement for Azad Kashmir, it will not only be written about how many people were on the streets, how many were killed, how many were arrested and how many sit-ins were held. The question will also be asked about where journalism stood at that time and then, perhaps, as always, the same hollow slogans will be heard from any protest: “Kane saw it, Sharaf saw it, now you see it too, journalism is alive, journalism is alive\u2026”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
