The ongoing protest sit-in and lockdown in Rawalakot and its surrounding areas of Pakistani-administered Jammu and Kashmir completed 46 days today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Jammu Kashmir Joint Public Action Committee leader Omar Nazir Kashmiri has claimed that the deadlock in the backdoor talks has been ended and all the important points have been agreed upon, however, the final decision will be taken only after a written agreement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He said that if a written agreement is not reached, a long march will be held once again, however, no date for the long march was given this time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On Thursday, prayer services and protest programs were organized at various places including Rawalakot to express solidarity with the martyrs. The main gathering was held at the Direk Eidgah, where thousands of people participated, while protest sit-ins continued in other areas including the bus terminal, Singola Road, Mujahidabad, Paniola and Pothi Makwalan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On the other hand, internet service has been restored in Mirpur division, while Rawalakot city remains under siege. Forces are deployed inside the city and protesters maintain control over the entrance routes. The shortage of essential goods has also intensified in the city and several families have temporarily relocated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It may be recalled that on June 9, the Joint Public Action Committee had called for a long march in favor of the 38-point Charter of Demands and demands for electoral reforms, after which the protest that began is still ongoing. At least 44 civilians and 35 security personnel have lost their lives in various clashes, security operations and other incidents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The government has not yet confirmed the formal talks and is emphasizing an unconditional end to the protest, while preparations for the general elections are also underway.
