The death toll due to flash floods on the border of Nepal and Tibet is continuously increasing. In such a situation, scientists have revealed that the floods were caused by the collapse of a glacier due to the rapid melting of snow in the Himalayas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More than 60 hours have passed since the floods in Nepal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Initially, it was said that the landslide was caused by an earthquake and then the floods, as a result of which more than 500 people have lost their lives so far. Later, the US Geological Survey explained that the cause of the disaster was a \u2018glacier collapse\u2019. This is the process in which a glacier or part of it breaks and shatters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the latest statement from Nepal\u2019s Disaster Relief Agency, the death toll due to the floods has increased to 579, while 2,000 people are still missing, for whose recovery a rescue operation is underway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The agency said 517 foreigners were among the missing. However, Nepalese police had previously said 575 foreigners were missing, including 33 British nationals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chinese state media reported five deaths in Tibet and more than 550 missing, but it was not clear whether those figures included those killed or missing in Nepal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chinese authorities are monitoring a temporary lake formed by the landslide. Search operations were temporarily suspended due to fears that the lake could crack and release more water, but rescue efforts have since resumed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The impact of the glacier\u2019s collapse and impact on the valley floor was so intense that it was recorded as a magnitude 5.2, according to data from the US Geological Survey and scientists who analyzed the incident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr Simon Cook, a glaciologist at the University of Dundee, told the BBC that his team had identified a glacier near the Langtang Lirong peak in Nepal that had collapsed. The site is about 15km west of the flooded area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They estimated that the glacier had fallen in a northwesterly direction and then moved westwards in the direction of the flow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An analysis by the intergovernmental scientific body, the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development, has suggested that the event may have been a \u201chigh-altitude avalanche of ice and rock\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a result, \u201ca large amount of ice and rock debris\u201d entered the Lande Khola, a tributary of the Bhote Koshi River, causing the river to suddenly accelerate and carry large chunks of water, sediment and rock downstream.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The water level in the lower reaches of the rivers rose by seven to nine meters within 30 minutes, the center said, and several water monitoring stations were washed away or damaged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The devastating floods in Nepal’s Bhutikoshi River on Wednesday caused widespread destruction in three districts. More than 500 people have died in the disaster, while hundreds of others, including security forces personnel, foreign tourists and local citizens, are still missing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The floods severely damaged roads, bridges, electrical infrastructure and populated areas, causing huge loss of life and property. According to officials, it is one of the worst natural disasters to hit Nepal in recent years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the Nepal Tourism Board, the missing tourists include more than 100 Indians, 54 Americans, 34 Australians and 33 British citizens. In addition, more than 100 Nepalese citizens are also missing. The area is very popular with pilgrims and trekkers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Tibet, Chinese state media reported three deaths and 265 missing. CCTV footage from Tibet showed a huge torrent of water and mud crashing into buildings at a border crossing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dozens of Nepali police, army personnel and electricity workers are also missing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
