US President Donald Trump has announced that he is immediately banning news organizations CNN, MSNBC, and Politico from the White House.

In a statement released on Truth Social on Friday, President Trump said that these media outlets publish or broadcast “constant fabrications and fake news” about his administration; however, he did not provide any specific examples.

Trump later described this as a “very simple ban,” but did not clarify how it would be enforced or whether journalists from these organizations would be barred from entering the White House. Even shortly after the announcement, correspondents from CNN and Politico remained present at the White House.

CNN, a US news organization, termed the potential ban an “unlawful attack” on the freedom of the press guaranteed by the US Constitution, stating that the government has no right to interfere with its reporting.

Politico also stated that it would vigorously defend its constitutional rights. However, MSNBC—formerly known as MSNBC—declined to comment.

White House Correspondents’ Association President Jackie Heinrich stated, “Targeting journalists for doing their jobs is indefensible.” According to her, the issue is not merely about the rights of journalists but also the American public’s right to receive complete and independent information regarding the activities, policies, and decisions of the President and the government. Earlier, in February 2025, the White House barred reporters from the Associated Press (AP) from entering certain events. This dispute arose when the AP refused to rename the “Gulf of Mexico” to the “Gulf of America” in its reporting, despite a directive from Trump to do so.

According to the US news outlet Axios, President Trump had also revoked the White House press credentials of CNN journalist Jim Acosta in 2018 during his first term; however, this was not a ban on CNN as a whole, but rather a matter concerning the access of a specific journalist.
