Mixed signals have also emerged from the United States, a Saudi ally. According to the US news website Axios, Washington rejected a request from Saudi Arabia last week to launch air strikes against the Houthis, while Fox News reported on Sunday that US President Donald Trump stated the Houthis had agreed not to target American installations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
CIA Director John Ratcliffe met with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi on Sunday; this was an unusual visit to Cairo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The visit took place just days after Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman visited the Egyptian capital, where he and President Sisi emphasized the need to ensure the security of maritime traffic through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. However, the Houthis have seized control of the area along the strait on the Yemeni coast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Houthis had previously warned against joining the Saudi-led coalition in the Yemen war. They stated that they had assured the Trump administration they would not target US naval vessels in the Red Sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Saudi Arabia took immediate measures to contain the impact of Houthi attacks on its territory. On Sunday, major Saudi newspapers made no mention of the attack on Riyadh, even though the Saudi-led military coalition had announced just hours earlier that it had intercepted and destroyed a ballistic missile fired by the Houthis at the capital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
