Muneer Soomro, the Deputy Commissioner of Balochistan’s Kharan district, has allegedly been abducted by unidentified armed men. A senior government official confirmed the abduction on Sunday night, stating that three other individuals traveling with the Deputy Commissioner were also abducted.

Initially, two senior government officials had not confirmed the abduction, though they did confirm his disappearance; they stated that Muneer Soomro was traveling from Quetta to Kharan, and contact was lost after he passed through Nushki district and entered the limits of Kharan.

According to officials, multiple attempts were made to contact the Deputy Commissioner and his associates via mobile phone after contact was lost, but their phones remained switched off.

Later, a senior Balochistan government official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told the BBC that the Deputy Commissioner was traveling in a private vehicle with three other people, including his personal bodyguard. According to the official, after entering Kharan’s territory, unidentified armed men abducted them and took them to an undisclosed location.

Government sources state that efforts have been initiated at the level of various agencies to ensure the safe recovery of the Deputy Commissioner and the others abducted with him.

So far, no organization or group has claimed responsibility for the incident.

Multiple attempts were made to contact Balochistan’s Home Minister, Ziaullah Langau, and the Home Department’s media aide, Babar Yousafzai, to obtain their comments, but they could not be reached. Kharan is located approximately 300 kilometers southwest of Quetta, the capital of Balochistan, and is counted among the areas of the province that have long been affected by insurgency. Government officials state that measures are underway to improve the law and order situation in the region.
