John McDonnell, a Labour Party MP and former Shadow Chancellor, has urged the British government to play a more active role regarding human rights issues in Balochistan. He stated that Britain bears a “special responsibility” due to its own colonial history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Addressing the 12th Balochistan International Conference\u2014organized by the BNM\u2014via video link at the Geneva Press Club on Thursday, McDonnell said that British ministers should assist in addressing human rights violations and recognize the Baloch people’s demands for “peace, justice, and the right to self-determination.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
John McDonnell informed the participants that he has been providing political and diplomatic support in the UK to Baloch individuals affected by Pakistani oppression and intends to maintain this stance. He added that the British government must also acknowledge its responsibilities regarding asylum; new restrictions have exacerbated the difficulties faced by asylum seekers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He reiterated his position that certain individuals seek asylum and protection because their lives are in danger, though he also acknowledged the limitations of his efforts. According to him, influencing policy is challenging given the British government’s relations with Pakistan. He stated that Britain\u2019s past rule in the region has imposed certain responsibilities upon it in the present day. Given its history of colonial governance in the region, Britain must acknowledge its role; consequently, it bears a special responsibility to ensure that the Baloch people enjoy the same fundamental rights that exist in Britain\u2014namely, the right to self-determination, human rights, and the right to basic protection, peace, and justice within their own land.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He noted that there has been a change in Britain’s political leadership; against this backdrop, activists will seek meetings with ministers to discuss a strategy that addresses urgent issues while also incorporating a long-term stance on civil liberties and the right to self-determination.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
