Iran’s Assembly of Experts has appointed Ayatollah Mujtaba Khamenei as the country’s new supreme leader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The decision was made after news broke that former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei had been killed in Israeli and American attacks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to the foreign news agency AFP, the Assembly of Experts considered the election of a new leader in an emergency meeting and announced the appointment of Mujtaba Khamenei as the third supreme leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mujtaba Khamenei, who is said to be about 56 years old, was elected to the position by a majority vote of the members of the Assembly of Experts. The statement said that despite the difficult circumstances, there was no delay in the election of a new leader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On the other hand, Iran’s powerful military organization, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, also declared its loyalty to Mujtaba Khamenei on Sunday, saying that they were ready to fully comply with the orders of the new Supreme Leader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
US President Donald Trump, meanwhile, reacted to the appointment, saying that if Iran does not seek US approval in this matter, the new leadership will not be able to last long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi rejected the US position, saying that Iran will not accept any external interference in its internal decisions and that the choice of leadership is entirely a matter for the Iranian people and institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
