In a separate statement, the Israeli military also claimed to have killed Gholam Reza Soleimani, commander of Iran\u2019s paramilitary Basij Force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to the military, Soleimani led this militia affiliated with the Revolutionary Guards for six years. Iranian media have not released any news in this regard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Following the Israeli claims, a handwritten message has appeared on Iranian state media and Larijani\u2019s social media accounts, paying tribute to the fighters of the Iranian Navy. The message is not timed or dated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, state media says it was made today. The statement comes as Iran is paying tribute to the 84 sailors killed in the attack on a US submarine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ali Larijani is an influential figure in Iranian politics. He was appointed Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council in August 2025 with the approval of President Masoud Peshkeshian and is also the Supreme Leader\u2019s representative on the council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He previously served as the Speaker of Iran\u2019s Parliament from May 2008 to May 2020 and as Iran\u2019s chief nuclear negotiator from 2005 to 2007. Larijani is considered a \u201cmoderate conservative\u201d within Iran\u2019s current leadership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Several members of his family also play important roles in Iranian politics. His brother, Sadeq Larijani, is the chairman of the Expediency Council.
