There has been a strong reaction from civic and social circles on the alleged unjustified attempt to arrest Sikandar Shigri, a well-known social activist and powerful voice from the Shigar Valley of Gilgit-Baltistan under Pakistan administration.
Various circles have condemned the move and said that targeting peaceful social activists is against constitutional and democratic principles.
They said that under Article 19 of the Constitution of Pakistan, every citizen has the right to freedom of expression, and any attempt to restrict it is unacceptable.
Local people and social activists said that differences of opinion are the beauty of democracy and the solution to problems is not in arrests but in dialogue.
They demanded that any unjustified action against Sikandar Shigri be stopped immediately and the protection of the fundamental rights of citizens be ensured.
Protesters and civic groups also stressed the need to stop the harassment of social and political activists by portraying dissent as rebellion, as such measures only complicate problems rather than solve them.
