A preliminary list of 38 missing and arrested persons has been compiled in the wake of the recent crackdown in Pakistan-administered Jammu and Kashmir.
According to sources, this available data is still incomplete and the process of collecting information on other persons forcibly disappeared from different areas is ongoing.
Sources say that due to the prolonged shutdown of internet service in the region for more than 40 days, there are serious difficulties in obtaining complete and timely information from different districts. The Public Action Committee and other circles hope that more authentic and comprehensive details will come out after the internet is restored, which will be made public regularly after verification. The concerned circles have appealed to the public that if anyone has any verified information regarding missing or detained persons, please provide it to complete the record.
It should be noted that during the ongoing crackdown in Kashmir for more than a month, hundreds of protesters have been confirmed to have been arrested and subsequently disappeared. Public circles and the Joint Public Action Committee allege that these arrests and enforced disappearances have been carried out by the Pakistani army, intelligence agencies and Rangers.
Shaukat Nawaz Mir (born Habibullah Mir), a key leader of the Awami Tehreek, was formally arrested by the forces, of which there is video evidence, but he has not been produced in any court nor has his presence been reported in any police station. This incident and the mysterious disappearance of dozens of other people have created serious concern among the Kashmiri people, the Action Committee and human rights organizations.
