Student leader Mujeeb Akbar, who hails from Pakistan-administered Jammu and Kashmir, has been allegedly abducted from Lahore. According to his wife Faiza Khan, he was detained by some officials from his flat in Education Town, Wahdat Road, Lahore at around 2 pm on Friday (July 17) and taken in an ambulance, which had no number plate.
Faiza Khan told ‘Judujhad’ that there was a knock on her door and when she opened the door, at least 5 officials entered, two of whom were wearing black uniforms and were armed, while the other officials were dressed in civilian clothes and were showing their affiliation with a government agency.
She said that they also took her husband’s mobile phone and laptop with them.
Faiza Khan said that he took Mujeeb Akbar with him on foot for a short distance on the road and then went ahead and boarded an ambulance, which was behind him.
She said that Mujeeb Akbar is the deputy secretary general of the Jammu Kashmir National Students Federation (JKNSF), a left-wing student organization in Jammu and Kashmir. He recently completed his graduation in sociology from Punjab University, and was preparing to take admission in MPhil. During this time, he was also associated with a local business here.
Faiza Khan said that she has also filed an application at the concerned police station, but no FIR has been registered. She said that on informing on the emergency number (15), some officials came and took out CCTV footage, in which the officials are seen taking Mujeeb Akbar and the ambulance is also seen behind him.
Faiza Khan has appealed to the police and law enforcement agencies to immediately recover Mujeeb Akbar. She said that if Mujeeb Akbar has committed any crime, he should be presented in court. Such forcible extrajudicial abduction and arbitrary detention is unconstitutional and illegal.
Meanwhile, a statement issued by the spokesperson of the Jammu Kashmir National Students Federation has also demanded the immediate and unconditional release of Mujeeb Akbar. The press release states that Mujeeb Akbar was carrying out activities in connection with the ongoing public rights movement in Jammu and Kashmir. He was forcibly abducted for this reason.
Earlier, several activists of Jammu and Kashmir have been forcibly abducted from other cities of Pakistan including Islamabad. Some activists have been handed over to the Jammu and Kashmir Police after court orders. However, there are several activists about whom there is no information.
The press release demanded that all prisoners and forcibly disappeared leaders, including Mujeeb Akbar, be immediately recovered and released unconditionally.
It should be recalled that the government forces’ crackdown on the recent popular movement in Kashmir has so far confirmed the enforced disappearance of 38 people.
