The intense state pressure and repression that the ongoing public movement in Pakistan-administered Jammu and Kashmir is facing is no longer limited to the arrests of a few political activists. According to available information and ground reports, along with the state repression of ordinary innocent and innocent citizens, leaders, nationalists and activists holding left-wing ideologies in the region are being targeted, especially through various cases, arrests, severe restrictions and retaliatory administrative actions.
Intellectual siege and crackdown on the leadership of Jammu Kashmir People’s National Party (JKPNP)
In this serious situation, the ongoing actions against almost the entire central leadership and leadership of the ‘Jammu Kashmir People’s National Party’ (JKPNP) are particularly noteworthy and worrying. According to the information available, various party officials are being targeted on the following grounds:
Wajid Ali Wajid Advocate (Chairman): The party chairman’s movements have been forcibly restricted, while there are reports of his national identity card and mobile phone numbers being blocked.
Ilyas Kashmiri (Secretary General): His name has been placed in the Fourth Schedule (Schedule 4), all bank accounts have been closed, several serious cases have been registered against him, while his and his brother’s personal businesses have also been sealed.
Asif Kashmiri (Vice Chairman): He has been shifted to an unknown location since his detention from his sister’s house in Mirpur about four weeks ago and no information has been provided about him till date.
Zulfiqar Raja Advocate (Former Chairman): The former chairman of the party has also been placed in Schedule 4 and strict travel restrictions have been imposed on him.
Salma Hameed (President, Bagh District): Several cases have also been registered against Bagh Chapter President Salma Hameed.
Kiran Kanwal (Secretary for Publicity): Party Secretary for Publicity Kiran Kanwal is also facing continuous state action and retaliation.
Habib Rehman (International Secretary): Serious cases like sedition have been registered against the party’s International Secretary.
Ajab Khan (Leader, UK-based): Innocent youths from the family of UK-based party leader Ajab Khan have been arrested and detained on false charges.
Closure of Bagh Library: Fear of intellectual consciousness more than political organization?
The library established under the auspices of JKPNP in Bagh District has also been sealed by the administration. This library was a center where continuous efforts were being made to connect the youth with books, studies and political and intellectual discussions.
The closure of this library raises the important question of whether the target of state action is only a political organization or also the intellectual process through which leftist political consciousness is being created among the youth? The state can seal libraries, block access to books, close businesses and arrest activists; but it can never seal the questions that arise in a society.
Violence against NSF (JKNSF) and other nationalists
This series of state repression is not limited to just one party, but people associated with Jammu Kashmir National Students Federation (JKNSF) and other nationalist organizations are also facing similar situations:
Usama Jamil Shaheed (PhD Scholar): The murder of prominent NSF leader and PhD scholar Usama Jamil is a very serious and tragic incident in this entire scenario, who was allegedly killed himself.
Cases and killings: False cases have been filed against countless youth of NSF and other nationalist parties, while many people have been killed.
Why the ‘Jammu Kashmir People’s National Party’?
The answer to this question can be found in the basic political and ideological role of this party. JKPNP has been continuously working on the issues of leftist ideology, class consciousness, national question, social justice and public rights for a long time. It connected the youth with books, studies and ideological debates instead of limiting them to political slogans. The library in the garden was also a bright symbol of this intellectual process.
Mass movements do not arise suddenly; behind them are years of political struggle, intellectual training, organization and public experiences. Today, if a major mass movement in Kashmir is raising questions about its fundamental rights, economic justice and political authority, the role of the left and progressive forces in its intellectual background cannot be ignored.
Joint Public Action Committee, Crackdown and Censorship
The state’s crackdown on the ongoing public movement has taken a very serious form:
Shaukat Nawaz Mir’s hiding and expulsion: After the arrest of Jammu and Kashmir Joint Public Action Committee leader Shaukat Nawaz Mir and other key representatives, they have not yet been produced in any court, and there is no information about their whereabouts.
Enforced Disappearances and Enslavement: Thousands of protesters have been arrested and forcibly disappeared. While many political and social activists have been forced to go into hiding to protect themselves from state violence and arrest.
Human Losses and Holocaust Situation: Hundreds of protesters have been killed in the ongoing public movement so far under the direct fire and genocide policy of the security forces.
Black Out: Internet services are completely shut down in the region and international media has been barred from ground reporting, due to which a horrific situation like Holocaust is being carried out by the army and the Kashmiri people are being buried alive, while the international community is also a silent spectator.
Change in public attitudes and the path to the future
With the unrestrained use of state power, a clear line and deep hatred against the state has emerged among the people. The Kashmiris who used to chant slogans of “Kashmir will become Pakistan” given by the ruling party till yesterday, today are chanting slogans of “Death to Pakistan” and completely free Kashmir in strong reaction.
The solution to the current crisis in Jammu and Kashmir is not in further repression and violence but in political dialogue, release of all political prisoners, transparent judicial process and listening to the public demands truthfully. If there is evidence of a crime against someone, he should be presented in court, but criminalizing political differences and politics of books and ideology is a very dangerous path for the democratic future of the region.
