South Korean media reported that its government is preparing to deploy military equipment and personnel to protect the “freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz,” and plans to launch the mission before the end of this year.
Reuters reported on Thursday, September 12, that South Korean media cited government and military sources as saying that Seoul is taking the necessary legal steps to obtain parliamentary approval for the deployment.
According to the reports, the government plans to submit a formal request for parliamentary approval this month after reviewing the plan in the cabinet.
South Korea’s possible military deployment comes at a time when the security situation in the Strait of Hormuz is tense and attacks on commercial vessels have increased in recent weeks. That is why several countries are evaluating their potential role in protecting maritime security in the vital waterway.
However, South Korean government officials have not yet officially responded to these reports.
