Chagai district in Balochistan—the site where Pakistan asserted its status as a nuclear power through atomic tests and a hub for major global gold, silver, and copper projects like Reko Diq and Saindak—is currently gripped by a severe security crisis.
Despite stringent security measures, pro-independence Baloch militant groups continue to operate freely and launch lethal attacks on security forces and project sites; the situation has now escalated to the point where unidentified gunmen have abducted Gul Shah Muhammad Hasni, the Station House Officer (SHO) of Chagai Tehsil, in broad daylight from the bustling Chagai bazaar.
The alarming deterioration of security and the apparent helplessness of security forces in this mineral- and nuclear-rich district have sparked deep concern among global investors, who are now considering shutting down their multi-billion dollar projects.
