Brigadier General Hossein Zarifi, a commander in Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), has been killed during clashes with militants in the southeastern Iranian province of Sistan and Baluchistan.
According to the Iranian news agency Tasnim, the slain commander, Brigadier General Hossein Zarifi, was the commander of the Sajjad Base.
This unit, affiliated with the Quds Regional Base under the IRGC Ground Force, is a branch of the Guards operating in southeastern Iran.
Citing a statement from the Quds Regional Base, Tasnim reported that Brigadier General Zarifi was killed in clashes in Saravan district, where five militants were also eliminated.
The statement noted that Zarifi was killed “in a confrontation with terrorist elements linked to the enemy.”
Another report published by Tasnim yesterday attributed responsibility for these clashes to Jaish al-Adl. Following a merger with other militant organizations in 2025, the group had changed its name to the “People’s Resistance Front.”
Sistan and Baluchistan, home to a large portion of Iran’s Baluch population, suffers from greater poverty and underdevelopment compared to many other regions of the country.
According to experts, socio-economic hardships, combined with ethnic and religious disparities, have contributed to rising public discontent.
Over the past four decades, frequent clashes have occurred between militant groups and security forces in this restive province, while the smuggling of narcotics and other goods across the borders with Pakistan and Afghanistan has remained a persistent issue.
