Drama Surrounding the Abduction and Recovery of a Judge in Rawalakot; Accusations Leveled at the JKJAAC

A drama involving the abduction and subsequent recovery of a judge is unfolding in Rawalakot, a town in Pakistan-administered Kashmir, with the Joint Awami Action Committee being accused of orchestrating the incident.

The police claim to have recovered Additional District and Sessions Judge Muhammad Akram following an operation. According to the police, the judge had been allegedly abducted by activists associated with the banned Jammu and Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee.

A Rawalakot police official stated that the judge was recovered during an operation conducted on the night between Wednesday and Thursday.

According to the police, Additional District and Sessions Judge Muhammad Akram was traveling from Rawalakot toward Muzaffarabad via Pallandri when he—along with his vehicle—was allegedly abducted at gunpoint by activists of the Joint Awami Action Committee.

Local police reported that the judge’s driver and his security guard (gunman) were also present in the vehicle at the time.

In a statement issued by the Rawalakot police, it is alleged that during the incident, the committee’s activists opened fire outside a hospital, leaving two individuals—including a police officer—injured. It should be noted that the ‘Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee’—a grassroots movement for fundamental rights in Kashmir that has been declared a proscribed organization by the Government of Pakistan—now enjoys the full and robust support of the Kashmiri people. For over four months, protesters have been staging sit-ins in Rawalakot and other cities, with women and children also participating. Official state propaganda against the movement is no longer proving effective, as the public has become fully aware of how the government uses its controlled media to sabotage and defame the movement.
