The All Pakistan Lawyers Action Committee has announced a nationwide lawyers’ movement and said that the movement will be formally launched after the end of the judicial vacations, which will be led by senior lawyer Ali Ahmed Kurd.
The meeting held at the Supreme Court Bar Association premises was chaired by Ali Ahmed Kurd, where the Lawyers Action Committee unanimously passed a resolution to launch the movement. Addressing the meeting, Ali Ahmed Kurd said that this struggle will not be limited to lawyers alone, but the public will also be made a part of this movement, because in the current circumstances, the public’s trust in the political system has been shaken.
The six-point resolution passed in the meeting expressed serious reservations about the current procedure for appointing High Court judges, saying that appointments are being made on the basis of political affiliation and influence rather than competence. The resolution also criticized the current system of interviewing judges.
The Lawyers Action Committee expressed concern over the situation in Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan and demanded the establishment of an independent fact-finding commission to investigate the problems and grievances of these regions and a national-level public dialogue.
The resolution also raised objections to the continuous arrests of political prisoners, lawyer leaders and various political and social figures and said that the policy of suppressing dissenting voices could prove detrimental to the country.
The committee condemned the alleged interference and attempts at rigging in the Bar Council elections and demanded that all elections be held in accordance with the law, on time and through NADRA verification.
According to the Lawyers Action Committee, the first public meeting of the movement will be held in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, while it has been decided to hold a program in London at the invitation of overseas Pakistanis. In addition, expressing solidarity with the ongoing sit-in in the Bablu area of ​​Sindh, it also demanded that the Sindh government protect the rights of minorities and accept their demands.
