The death toll from devastating floods near the Tibetan border in Nepal has passed 1,000. Thousands are still missing, according to the country’s disaster management agency.
More than 3,900 people are missing, including more than 600 workers believed to be trapped in a vast network of mud-filled tunnels at hydroelectric projects on the banks of the Trishuli River.
Engineers are using pumps to pump air into the tunnels. A rescue team managed to enter one tunnel, but returned after finding no one there.
Speaking to BBC Nepali, Anushela Bhandari, the wife of 33-year-old engineer Auros Bhandari, said: “I wish we could find them.” I wish they would come back home.’ The Oros are missing from a hydroelectric project site.
Nepal’s Prime Minister Balendra Shah said on Monday that 279 people have been safely evacuated from the project sites.
The rescue operation is being led by an international team comprising military personnel from China and Nepal, while experts from India, South Korea and Australia are also involved in the rescue efforts.
