Death toll rises to 34 following school roof collapse in Peshawar

The death toll from the collapse of the roof at ‘Al-Khair Education Center’—a private school located in the ‘Der Colony’ area of Peshawar—has reached 34. The victims include 33 children, aged between six and 14, and a 25-year-old teacher, Samreen Bibi.

According to rescue officials, relief operations have concluded, and the police have confirmed the arrest of the school principal. Police further stated that preliminary investigations indicate the school building was structurally weak, which led to the incident.

Rescue officials at the scene and BBC correspondent Bilal Ahmed reported that the school appeared to have been constructed using prefabricated roofing elements rather than a solid, permanent concrete slab (lintel).

A senior police officer in Peshawar stated that the school building was in a dilapidated condition; the roofs could not support the weight of the students and subsequently collapsed.
