LPG Price in Pakistan Exceeds Rs 600 per kg

The price of LPG in Pakistan has seen a significant surge in recent days, exceeding Rs 600 per kg.

The Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) has confirmed this sharp increase in its latest inflation data for the country. According to dealers associated with the LPG sector, the price of an 11.67 kg LPG cylinder has reached Rs 7,000, up from Rs 4,500 just last week.

According to the Bureau of Statistics, LPG prices have risen by 22.50% compared to the previous week, and are 107% higher than they were during the same week in October last year.

It should be noted that the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA)—the body overseeing the oil and gas sector in Pakistan—had set the LPG price at Rs 279 per kg for the month of October. However, according to the Bureau of Statistics, the fuel is currently being sold at prices ranging from Rs 550 to Rs 610 per kg across various parts of the country.

While LPG consumption in Pakistan typically rises at the onset of the winter season—driving up prices due to increased demand—the current, substantial price hike is largely attributed to a disruption in supply caused by the closure of the border with Iran.

In addition to domestic production from local refineries and oil and gas fields, Pakistan also imports LPG from Iran. Irfan Khokhar, Chairman of the LPG Distributors Association in Pakistan, confirmed the price hike. He warned that “prices could rise further in the coming days,” noting that the closure of the Iranian border has disrupted the supply.

“Furthermore, the regulatory authority has failed to ensure that LPG is sold at the government-mandated price—even though the official rate already includes a healthy profit margin for distributors. He explained that while the bulk of the LPG supply originates from local refineries and gas fields, it is being sold on the black market without any checks or restrictions.”
