The representatives of the contractor community, including the Government Conductors Association Gilgit-Baltistan and officials of Gilgit district, in an important meeting reviewed the impact of the recent oil price hike and announced an immediate halt to work on ongoing development projects.
According to a press release, the meeting, led by Association President Bashir Ahmed and Gilgit District President Abdul Jalal, said that due to the current inflation, it was not possible to continue working at the old rates. It was clarified that the contractor who continues to work contrary to this decision will lose organizational support.
The meeting demanded that the previous tenders and agreements be canceled, new rates be set according to the market, and the projects be re-tendered so that work can be done in the current circumstances. It was further said that protests will be held against the work given on emergency basis.
Abdul Jalal said that working at the current rates is causing severe financial hardship for the contractor community, which needs to be reviewed urgently.
The meeting decided that another important meeting will be held at the Chief Office next Monday, in which the future course of action will be finalized. The participants unanimously expressed their full support for the collective decisions.
