Explosion in a vehicle packed with explosives in South Waziristan, one civilian killed, 14 injured

At least one young citizen was killed and 14 people were injured in an explosion in a vehicle packed with explosives in the tribal district of South Waziristan in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

According to District Police Officer South Waziristan Lower Tahir Shah Wazir, the explosion took place near Azam Warsak Bazaar, in which most of the civilians were affected.

Medical Superintendent of District Headquarters Hospital Wana Jan Muhammad Shinwari told the BBC that 14 injured people have been brought to the hospital, of whom three to four are in critical condition.

He said that all the injured are being provided medical assistance, while three children are among the injured.

According to locals, the young man who died in the explosion, Muhammad Iqbal, was a cricket enthusiast and was playing cricket at the time of the explosion. Eight-year-old Aimal Kansi is also among the injured. Aimal’s father, Muhammad Aslam, said that the children were playing outside their house when a sudden explosion occurred, after which gunfire was heard.

According to him, his son was injured on the spot and was immediately shifted to Wana Hospital.

Azam Warsak area is located about 16 kilometers from the district headquarters Wana. Locals say that the explosion occurred a few meters from Azam Warsak Bazaar, while a security force check post is also set up nearby.

Sources say that when a vehicle loaded with explosives was passing through the area, security personnel opened fire on it, after which the vehicle exploded. According to reports, the attackers apparently targeted security personnel, however, as the explosion occurred before it reached its target, civilians suffered the most.
