Students at Kashmir University Muzaffarabad in Pakistani Kashmir have called for an all-party conference and announced to take practical steps themselves to hold student union elections.
In a statement issued after the meeting, the students said that the political parties and rulers of the region have been “ruling” on student politics for the past several decades and this practice is being continued by not holding student union elections.
According to the students, in 2018 too, the government had issued a notification to hold student union elections, but it was limited to paperwork only. Later, in recent days, this demand was also included in the Charter of Demands of the Jammu and Kashmir Joint Public Action Committee, but despite this, no practical progress could be made.
The students further said in their statement that the rulers do not want to hold student union elections, which is why the students have now decided to move forward on their own and ensure that elections are held from the University of Kashmir on Tuesday, May 19, 2026.
According to the student leaders, more details regarding the future course of action, election procedures and schedule in other institutions will also be released soon.
