Government Denies Shaukat Nawaz Mir’s Detention; Family Claims Otherwise

The Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee—an organization declared proscribed in Pakistan-administered Kashmir—has stated that a “highly significant announcement” will be made on October 4 as part of the ongoing protests that have continued for several months. Amidst this, however, the alleged disappearance of the committee’s leader, Shaukat Nawaz Mir, remains a mystery.

In a petition filed with the Kashmir High Court, Shaukat Nawaz Mir’s family maintains that he is in alleged illegal police custody and has demanded his recovery. Conversely, the Kashmir government and the police department have dismissed the family’s stance as “baseless” in court, claiming that Shaukat Mir is not in the custody of the police or any state department but has instead gone into hiding.

Approximately three months ago, on June 30, the Awami Action Committee claimed in a statement that Shaukat Nawaz Mir had been arrested in the Dhirkot area. A video regarding this incident also circulated widely on social media, though BBC Urdu cannot independently verify its authenticity.

On June 30, numerous local and international media outlets reported the news of Shaukat Mir’s arrest, citing official sources. Muzaffarabad Deputy Commissioner Munir Qureshi had confirmed the arrest while speaking to various media outlets, including BBC Urdu.
