Brazil: Lula da Silva Elected President for the Fourth Time

Brazil’s leftist leader, Lula da Silva, has been elected president for the fourth time. He defeated Flávio Bolsonaro in a highly dramatic contest.

Addressing his supporters in São Paulo, 80-year-old Lula declared: “Brazil will not accept becoming anyone’s ‘backyard’.”

The electoral battle was exceptionally intense and bitter. According to observers, this outcome signals a shift in a different direction—contrary to the growing right-wing political trend seen elsewhere in Latin America.

Right-wing Senator Flávio Bolsonaro has termed the election results “incomprehensible” and has demanded that they be annulled.

His father, former President Jair Bolsonaro, is currently imprisoned, while Flávio had secured a victory in the first round of the election held earlier this month.

On the day of the vote, polling hours at certain stations were extended by two hours, following requests from both campaign teams.
