According to the latest report of the Global Terrorism Index 2026, the impact of terrorism has deepened in Pakistan over the past year, where deaths have increased while the total number of attacks has recorded a slight decline.
According to the report, the number of people killed in terrorist attacks has reached 1,139, an increase of about six percent. This is the sixth consecutive year that the country has seen an increase in deaths due to terrorism, indicating a continued deterioration in the security situation.
On the other hand, the total number of terrorist attacks has seen a slight decline. This number decreased to 1,045 in 2025 compared to 1,098 attacks in 2024.
According to experts, despite the decrease in the number of attacks, their increase in intensity and lethality is a worrying trend.
Another important aspect in the report is the extraordinary increase in hostage-taking incidents. The number of such incidents increased from 101 in 2024 to 655 in 2025 — a more than six-fold increase. This trend indicates a change in the tactics of extremist groups, where kidnappings and hostage-taking are being increased alongside direct attacks.
Experts say that while a slight decrease in the number of attacks may seem like a positive sign, the increase in deaths and hostage-taking incidents reflects that the threat of terrorism remains present and its nature is becoming more complex.
The report urges the government and security agencies to re-adjust their strategies according to the changing situation to ensure the safety of citizens.
