The second round of talks between Iran and the US has begun in the Pakistani capital Islamabad, which is currently ongoing at the level of technical experts.
According to a senior Pakistani Foreign Ministry official, both sides are examining the technical aspects of their respective demands in detail at this stage.
Earlier, initial talks at the level of heads of state have been held between the two countries under Pakistani mediation, which two government officials described as “positive” in an interview with BBC Urdu.
According to the White House Press Pool, technical experts from various fields are present in Islamabad from the US side, while additional assistance is also being provided from Washington.
The Iranian delegation also includes high-level officials, including Dr. Nasser Hemmati, the governor of the Central Bank of Iran.
Mohammad Golzari, a spokesman for the Iranian government’s Information Council, has said that written drafts are being exchanged between Iranian and American experts in the presence of Pakistani mediators.
According to the Iranian news agency IRNA, Golzari said that since Saturday morning, Iranian committees have held several meetings, reviewed different positions and prepared for the talks in full coordination.
According to him, the trilateral talks began against the backdrop of tensions in Lebanon, reports of a cessation of attacks on Beirut, Iranian warnings over ceasefire violations and the release of Iran’s frozen assets.
Golzari said that as the atmosphere of the talks became more serious, the talks entered the experts’ phase, after which some members of the Iranian delegation’s special committees also left for Islamabad.
According to him, after the conclusion of the face-to-face talks, teams of Iranian and American experts are currently exchanging written drafts on the issues under discussion.
He added that, in accordance with the president’s instructions, the high-level Iranian delegation is “defending national interests with all its might.”
