A senior official in the administration of US President Donald Trump claimed on Thursday that the fighting between the two countries has ended as a result of the ceasefire between the United States and Iran in early April.
The statement came at a time when the deadline set by Congress regarding the War Powers is ending.
President Trump has until Friday to either end the war with Iran or approach Congress to continue it and present the reasons for this war.
According to the international news agency Reuters, the official explained the administration’s position, saying: “The fight that began on February 28 regarding the War Powers Act is over.”
He added that there has been no fighting between the US and Iranian armed forces since the ceasefire three weeks ago.
Under the 1973 law, the president is authorized to continue military action for 60 days without seeking authorization from Congress, but after that he must either end it or seek authorization from Congress or a 30-day extension based on an “urgent military necessity” for the security of the armed forces.
